Nature Happenings

  • Nov. 1: Daylight Savings Time ends - "fall back"
  • Nov. 2: Full Moon, Nov. 16: New Moon
  • Nov. 7: Project Feeder Watch starts and extends until April.
  • Nov. 17-18: Leonid Meteor showers.
  • Tundra Swan Watch, Winona, MN, They reach a peak population of 2,000 - 6,000 from mid to late November.
  • Kinglets, Hermit Thrushes, Yellow-rumped Warblers, American Robins, Fox and White-throated Sparrows, Red-winged Blackbirds and grackles leave the area.
  • Last waterfowl and grebes migrate through.
  • "Gales of November" on Great Lakes.
  • Great Gray or Snowy Owls come south for food.
  • Common Redpolls mix with siskin and goldfinches at feeders.
  • Long-tailed Weasels (ermine) change into their white winter coats.
  • Common Loons, Tundra Swans and Common Goldeneyes leave the region.
  • Rough-legged Hawks arrive for the winter.
  • Frogs and toads settle into pond mud to over-winter/hibernate.
